In 1999 he joined ICAR-CNR, Institute of High Performance Computing and Networking of the Italian National Research Council, supported by an INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics) fellowship.
He obtained the PhD in Computer Science from the Radbound University, Nijmegen (Netherlands) with a thesis entitled "High Performance Data Mining using Bio-Inspired Techniques".

Since 2001, he is a researcher at ICAR-CNR (Institute of High Performance Computing and Networking) in Cosenza, Italy.
He is also a lecturer at University of Calabria and at University Magna Graecia of Catanzaro since 2001 for a number of courses (Operating System Laboratory, Operating Systems and Networks, Foundations of Computer Science and Applied Computer Science).

He was visiting researcher at University of Nottingham (United Kingdom) in 2007 and at Radbound University, Nijmegen (Netherlands) in 2008 and 2009.

His research interests focus on applications of distributed computing in the area of cellular automata, genetic programming, swarm intelligence, data mining and bioinformatics.

He is member of th Program Committee of many international conferences and workshops (GECCO, EuroGP, EVOBIO, PACT, NICSO etc..) and was chair for the special session "Multi-Agent and Bio-Inspired Algorithms and Applications for Distributed Systems" at IEEE PDP 2007 and for BADS 2009 (Bio-Inspired Algorithms for Distributed Systems) at ICAC '09.
He was guest editor for the special issues "Bio-Inspired Algorithms for Distributed Systems" on Future Generation Computer Systems, Elsevier.
He is member of the IEEE Computer Society and of the editorial board for The Open Artificial Intelligence Journal.
